Remembering Water is a seventy five minute performance piece featuring new invented instruments, created by STRING THEORY, including Harness Harps, Aqua Drums and the Sonic-String-Scape.
Culminating in the next level of STRING THEORY's exploration combining artistic mediums. The performance is interwoven with dance, original music, projections, signature invented instruments and technology.
STRING THEORY thematically explores the elements of water within 5 chapters including baptism, dehydration, destruction, supernatural and rebirth.
The performance space is transformed by STRING THEORY's long string sculptural instruments, and is energized by performers with wearable instruments, percussion sculptures, cello, bass, guitar, vocals and electronics. Nine performers total comprised of musicians and dancers.
Remembering Water's imagery and theme is loosely inspired by the photos, images and artwork by Parke Harrison, from the images collected in the book "The Architect's Brother".
Everything about "Remembering Water," a fully integrated dance-and-rock music pageant offered by Los Angeles-based String Theory at Santa Monica's charming Miles Playhouse, appealed to me.
"Remembering Water," which repeats next weekend, is really pure joy. Spooling through 13 staged rock songs for a nicely compact 65 minutes, the highly versatile and handsome troupe of 11 artists (seven musicians, four dancers) radiate a spontaneous pleasure in art-making that is rarely seen, and difficult for any viewer to resist.
Music Between the Lines
Hybrid performance troupe String Theory fuses rock, dance and classical influences in "Remembering Water"
String Theory, an abstract branch of physics, can be difficult to conceptualize. String Theory, the Venice-based performance troupe of musicians, dancers and harpists, may be equally hard to describe. The hybrid company concludes the current run of its multidisciplinary 75-minute show "Remembering Water" at the Miles Memorial Playhouse in Santa Monica this weekend.
The Miles Playhouse
The Miles Memorial Playhouse was designed in 1929 by prominent local architect John Byers in the Spanish Colonial revival style. The building's sponsor, J. Euclid Miles, was a leading citizen in the development of Santa Monica. In his last will and testament, Miles bequeathed $25,000 to the City to erect a theater “for the children and young men and women” of Santa Monica as a memorial to his daughter, Mary A. Miles.
